Like always I am giving fair warning to the fact that this book contains massive spoilers for the book Shadow Kiss-the third in the Vampire Acadeemy series- and would advise that if you have not read said book to skip over this quickly and without sneaking any peeks. Alright, cool.
Shadow Kiss was an amazing addition the the Vampire Academy series, it held my attention from start to end. With the novel starting off in the aftermath of Mason-Rose's best guy friend- being killed, you see as Rose struggles to come to grips with the horrible death of someone she cared very deeply for. As the events press on you see as Rose becomes more and more scared that she is losing her mind, I mean who wouldn't when you went through what she had to endure? When Rose starts seeing the ghost of Mason-later discovered to be a side effect of being shadow kissed- she hides it from everyone, including Lissa. Along with all of the personal drama in her own life Rose is trying to help deal with the new complications in Lissa's life as well, Adrian. Adrian is a spirit user, and one who wants to learn more. When Adrian and Lissa begin teaching each other how to use their powers and try to learn more about what exactly a spirit user is, Lissa-unitentionally- sends her 'darkness' into Rose, verses the alternative of increasing depression on herself. Poor Rose takes Lissa's darkness and because of this becomes very short tempered, and irrational, and when Rose gets assigned to Christian, not Lissa, for the novice field exercise, things become even more difficult. In a series of bad timing, Christian and Rose are 'attacked' by the guardians pretending to be strigoi, Mason appears to Rose, causing her to freeze up and in turn allowing for Christian to become a strigoi snack-not literally. On the positive side of things, the mesmerizing love between Rose and Dimitri finally gets its chance to bloom. And after a fun time in a cabin, the two lovers make plans to well... make things work. Only to come face to face with a full fledged invasion of strigoi. After the defeat of most of the strigoi the academy learns that 13 victims had been taken, one of which being Mason's best friend, Eddie. Thanks to the help of her mother and Dimitri, Rose is able to get a large rescue team to go save the captures and Eddie. Although only having enlisted the help of Mason's ghost, who was able to give Rose the direction she needed to find where the strigoi where holed up. But in a drastic turn of events, Dimitri falls on said mission. Rose has a difficult time dealing with the death of her true love, only to learn that he didn't just die... he became the very monster that he killed. And knowing what she did, Rose makes a life altering decision to leave school to go kill Dimitri, even if it means being killed in the process.
Alright so after that little recap I would just like to say that I absolutely loved this book until the ending. HOW CAN YOU KILL HIM! THAT IS SO WRONG! I understand why Mead did this but she was very cruel in getting your hopes up then crushing them. Overall I give this book a 9.5 out of 10. -.5 because I didn't want Dimitri to die....
Well that's that, thanks for reading.
